Jackson State University (JSU) sought to increase donations to support its student services department’s fundraising efforts. They quickly realized their greatest resource was the people they served: their students. As a result, JSU decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign to leverage its students’ social giving circles and expand its reach to a larger audience. In addition, they wanted the online giving forms to include an option to donate to specific departments at the university, so donors could give to the department they cared about most.
Challenge & Solution
[GiveSmart] stepped in and offered a crowdfunding campaign solution to meet their needs and help them achieve their goal. They created crowdfunding pages that allowed donors to target the university department they wished to support (e.g., the School of Arts or the School of Business). There was also a section that allowed students and alumni to group together in hopes of “beating” the other groups by raising more funds! Every donor received a message of thanks that fostered improved communication throughout the student and alumni base and encouraged future support.
Results
Exactly 1,288 donors supported Jackson State University by donating over $110,000! This total donation amount was driven by competition among crowdfunding groups, mainly fraternities and sororities, resulting in an easy, new, and fun way to fundraise for their university.
