Considering education as a vital part of building a successful future, United Way of Tulare County (UWTC) wanted to find a way to engage young donors, local high school students, and their families to get them thinking about college. UWTC needed to reach this younger audience, but getting a response from this group proved challenging.

Challenge & Solution

Given that high school students are always on their phones, [GiveSmart’s] text communication option was seen as a perfect way to encourage teenagers to engage. This communication solution meant that anyone who texted the keyword G2C2017 (go2college2017) to 51555 could subscribe to updates and receive immediate reminders about FAFSA and college application deadlines.

  • [GiveSmart’s] peer-to-peer fundraising pages
  • A drive-by celebration to hand out swag
  • A t-shirt design competition
  • An online dance party
  • A donor honor wall on a [GiveSmart] Event Page
  • A competition for the best fundraiser to win a private swim lesson from an Olympic gold medalist.

Results

This campaign to engage young donors significantly increased communications between UWTC and the kids they sought to help. The campaign captured over 1,250 subscribers, 747 in just one day! Also, United Way sent many messages to these kids and their parents to increase interest in college among those who hadn’t considered it.
