The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska has over 202 employees with seven offices across fifteen counties and serves over 4600 individuals annually.
The Ponca Restoration Act established our fifteen-county Service Delivery Area across Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. We offer a broad range of health, social, educational, and cultural services. The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is structurally unlike any other Tribe in Nebraska.
This uniqueness made the Tribe embark upon a vigorous program of educating and lobbying state and federal legislator officials to ensure that its members receive all the benefits and programs that the status as a federally recognized Tribe of Indians implies. The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is one of the most successful Tribes in Indian Country when it comes to effective lobbying and passage of favorable legislation and administrative policies.
The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska provides dedicated social and cultural services across Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. As their services to members grew, so did their need for finding a stronger solution for managing the budget, expenses, human resources, fixed assets and payroll and direct deposit.
The tribe’s accounting team desired a system that would securely and efficiently enable them to track Tribal expenses across all their administrative offices and the ability to change or edit reports directly within a centralized system.
Challenge & Solution
Working with disparate solutions over 20 years, The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska wanted to make sure as well that they could find an accounting solution built for managing different funds and the diverse system of services they were offering, including: domestic violence support, health services, educational services, environmental services, Ponca youth Enrichment fund and social services.
Managing Tribal Council expenses without accounting software became very difficult requiring back-end work on spreadsheets and integrating separate software solutions.
Through conversations, MIP was recommended as it was a strong solution being used by other Tribal Nations. The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska had a seasoned longtime staff, some of whom had worked with the tribe for over two decades, so changing existing accounting tools was a challenge.
In addition, The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska wanted to ensure the solution they picked would have strong tech support and training to ensure the shift to the new solution would be easier on the existing finance team. The Tribe also needed a system that would streamline their Accounts Payable bi-weekly processing time.
Results
With the implementation of MIP’s accounting software, the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska saw a reduction of 50% in the time spent processing bi-weekly Accounts Payable processing time.
They also were able to reduce the staff managing that task from 2 people to 1 person.
“MIP’s ability to track expenses, budgets, and taxes has allowed growth of services to skyrocket over the last 4 years,” said Jacob Olsufka, CFO of Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
